Dye Testing
Leak Detection
Dye testing is a simple yet highly effective method of identifying leaks within waste water pipework and drainage systems. We use a specialist, non-toxic coloured dye to trace the flow of water through pipework and identify where leaks or faults may be occurring.
The dye is introduced into the suspected pipework and monitored as it travels through the system. This allows our engineers to understand the route of the pipework, identify connection points and pinpoint exactly which section of the waste pipe is leaking.
While dye testing is particularly effective for investigating waste water pipes, it can also be used in other applications where tracking the flow of water is required. As with all of our leak detection methods, dye testing is rarely used in isolation. Our engineers combine it with other specialist technologies to build a complete picture and accurately locate the source of the leak with minimal disruption.
Technology:
Dye Testing
Best for: Detecting leaks in drains
Invasive or Non-invasive: Non-invasive
Detects: Where water is leaking out from drainage pipes in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens.
Used alone or with another technology? Dye testing is typically a stand alone method.
Suitable for: Domestic & commercial properties.
When is dye testing useful?
Identifying leaks in waste water pipework
Tracing the route of hidden waste pipes
Pinpointing which waste pipe is leaking
Investigating water entering basements or lower ground floors
Testing multiple pipework systems at the same time
Confirming leaks from toilets, sinks, showers or baths
Checking pipe connections and drainage systems
Supporting non-invasive leak detection investigations
How does Maystone use dye testing for leak detection?
Dye testing is one of the specialist methods we use to investigate leaks within waste water pipework and drainage systems. During an inspection, our engineers introduce a safe, coloured dye into the suspected pipework to trace the flow of water and identify where leaks are occurring.
By using different coloured dyes in separate appliances, bathrooms or individual properties, we can determine exactly which pipe or area is responsible for the leak. Dye testing can also be used to identify issues such as a toilet that is continuously leaking into the drain without obvious signs. Combined with our other advanced leak detection technologies, dye testing helps us accurately diagnose the problem while minimising unnecessary disruption.
Benefits & limitations of dye testing leak detection:
Simple method
Identifies individual pipes
Identifies which property is leaking
Identifies whether toilet, basin or bath is leaking.
Clear results aren't always guaranteed,
In some situations, dyed water may provide no more information than clear water.
Can cause secondary damage if not carefully managed,
Additional water can worsen an existing leak, which is why we assess if dye testing is the right approach first.
Not suitable for every leak investigation,
Dye testing is most effective for waste water pipework and isn't always the right method for structural leak detection.
Why we combine technologies
At Maystone Leak Detection, we understand that every leak is different, which is why we never rely on a single detection method in isolation. While each technology has its own strengths, combining multiple techniques allows our engineers to build a clearer picture of what is happening within your property.
By comparing the results from advanced technologies such as thermal imaging, acoustic listening, moisture mapping, tracer gas testing and other specialist methods, we can accurately confirm the source of a leak before recommending any repairs.
This approach helps us provide a more accurate diagnosis, reduce unnecessary disruption and ensure the right solution is used for your specific situation.
Our leak detection technologies include:
Common Questions about dye testing for leak detection:
-
Dye testing is a method used to trace the flow of water through pipework by introducing a coloured dye, helping engineers identify where a leak or fault may be occurring.
-
Dye testing is particularly useful for identifying leaks within waste water pipes, toilets, sinks, showers, baths and drainage systems where the source of the leak is difficult to locate.
-
Yes. Dye testing can help trace hidden leaks by showing where coloured water travels through a system, allowing engineers to identify the leaking pipe or connection point.
-
Yes. Specialist leak detection dyes are designed to be safe when used correctly. Our engineers assess each situation carefully to ensure dye testing is the most suitable method before carrying out an investigation.
-
Dye testing is most effective for waste water pipework. The other technologies we use, may be more suitable for structural leaks or hidden mains water leaks.
