As well as detecting the sound of a leak, the equipment can be traced from above ground, helping us establish the route of hidden pipework and pinpoint the location of the leak with minimal disruption.
Pipe mics provide a highly precise way of investigating difficult-to-locate water leaks. A specialist microphone is carefully inserted into a water-filled pipe and travels internally through the pipework, allowing our engineers to listen for the characteristic sound of escaping water from within the pipe itself.

How do Maystone use pipe microphones for leak detection?
Our engineers insert the specialist pipe microphone directly into a live, water-filled pipe through a suitable access point. As the microphone travels internally through the pipework, we listen for changes in sound until the characteristic noise created by escaping water is detected.
Once the suspected leak has been identified acoustically, we use CAT & Genny locating equipment to trace the position of the pipe mic from above ground. This allows us to establish exactly where that section of pipe is located beneath the surface.
Combining these two techniques gives us valuable information about both the route of the hidden pipework and the likely position of the leak, helping minimise unnecessary excavation when access or repair is required.
