Acoustic Profiling Leak Detection
Acoustic profiling is a non-invasive leak detection method that allows our engineers to listen for the sound created by water escaping from hidden pipework. Using specialist acoustic equipment, we can investigate leaks within underground pipes, central heating systems and concealed pipework without unnecessary excavation or damage.
Water escaping from a pressurised pipe creates sound and vibration that can travel through the pipework and surrounding materials. Our engineers use specialist acoustic equipment to detect and analyse these sounds, helping us identify whether a leak is present and narrow down its location.
The equipment can be fine-tuned to different frequencies, helping our engineers distinguish the characteristic sound of escaping water from surrounding background noise. Depending on the investigation, we can listen directly through exposed pipework using an acoustic probe or survey an area from above using a specialist ground microphone.
Technology:
Acoustic Profiling
Best for: Locating hidden leaks within underground and pressurised pipework.
Invasive or Non-invasive: Non-invasive
Detects: Sounds and vibrations created by water escaping from underground pipes or central heating systems.
Used alone or with another technology? Acoustic profiling can be used alone. It can also be combined with tracer gas testing or other specialist leak detection methods when further confirmation is required.
Suitable for: Domestic & commercial properties.
When is acoustic profiling useful?
Locating underground water leaks
Identifying which pipe is leaking
Investigating central heating leaks
Narrowing down the location of a leak
Investigating mains water leaks
Investigating hidden pipework
Avoiding unnecessary excavation
Supporting further leak detection testing
How does Maystone use acoustic profiling for leak detection?
Our engineers primarily use two methods of acoustic profiling depending on the pipework and the location of the suspected leak.
With the probe method, specialist acoustic equipment is placed directly onto accessible pipework. This allows us to listen through individual pipes and can be particularly useful where several pipes are located together and we need to establish which one is leaking.
For underground leaks, we use a ground microphone to listen through the surface above the pipework. By taking readings at different points and comparing the frequency and intensity of the sound, we can narrow down the area where escaping water is most likely to be located.
Our equipment can be fine-tuned according to factors such as pipe material and surrounding noise. Where necessary, acoustic profiling is then combined with other leak detection technologies to further investigate or confirm the source.
Benefits & limitations of acoustic profiling leak detection:
Non-invasive leak detection
Locates underground leaks
Identifies individual leaking pipes
Suitable for central heating systems
Specialist frequency analysis
Suitable for different pipe materials
Reduces unnecessary excavation
Works alongside other technologies
Sound can travel away from the leak
Sound and vibration can propagate through water, pipework and surrounding ground. This means the loudest reading is not always directly above the exact location of the leak.
Background noise can affect readings
Traffic, machinery, pumps and other environmental sounds can make acoustic investigations more challenging, although specialist equipment can help filter and isolate relevant frequencies.
Not every leak produces the same level of noise
The sound generated can vary depending on factors such as water pressure, pipe material, leak size and the surrounding ground conditions. Further testing may therefore be required.
Why we combine technologies
At Maystone Leak Detection, we understand that every leak is different, which is why we never rely on a single detection method in isolation. While each technology has its own strengths, combining multiple techniques allows our engineers to build a clearer picture of what is happening within your property.
By comparing the results from advanced technologies such as thermal imaging, acoustic listening, moisture mapping, tracer gas testing and other specialist methods, we can accurately confirm the source of a leak before recommending any repairs.
This approach helps us provide a more accurate diagnosis, reduce unnecessary disruption and ensure the right solution is used for your specific situation.

Common Questions about acoustic profiling for leak detection:
-
Acoustic leak detection uses specialist listening equipment to detect the sound and vibration created by water escaping from pressurised pipework. By comparing readings at different locations, our engineers can narrow down the likely position of a hidden leak.
-
Yes. Our engineers can use specialist ground microphones to listen for the sound of water escaping from underground pipes. This can help narrow down the location of a leak beneath floors, driveways, paths and other surfaces without immediately excavating the area.
-
In many situations, yes. Where several accessible pipes are located together, an acoustic probe can be placed directly onto each pipe. Comparing the sound from individual pipes can help our engineers determine which one is carrying the noise associated with the leak.
-
Acoustic profiling can be extremely useful for narrowing down the location of a hidden water leak, but the results need to be interpreted by an experienced engineer. Sound can travel along pipes and through the surrounding ground, so we may combine acoustic profiling with another technology, such as tracer gas testing, to confirm the precise location before repairs are carried out.
